Problem tuning DVD player, and connecting to new TV.

I've just bought a Toshiba Freeview TV/DVD combi 40D355*DB. I also have an old Sony HDD recorder RDR-HX510. I don't have access to cable or satellite. I want to connect the two devices so I can record using the timer, but I can't even tune in the Sony to receive any channels. I'm hoping that once I manage that, I can work out how to connect the devices, but without any tuned channels on the Sony, I'm stuck. The TV works fine using the aerial connection through the Sony, so there is some connectivity.
Any help, please?

I think these questions would be better posed in either "Home Theatre" or "Other Consumer Electronics" in the Electronics section of the forums, as they certainly have nothing to do with laptop computers.
