Processors and MHz

Hi,

I am looking to buy a laptop and I am puzzled by the big difference in
processor speed within the same price range, all other things kind of equal
(HDD, RAM). To make myself clear: in the 1300-1400 price range I see
something like:

Celeron M at 1.3 GHz
Celeron at 2.6 GHz
Celeron D at 2.9
Intel M at 1.5

There is a big diff from 1.5 to 2.9, how come? M-kind seems always kind of
low-speed. Any way to convert to flops, or some other performance unit?

Thanks
a.

If you like Intel go for the Pentium M.
and don't be confused about the speed, a Pentium M 1.6 is like using a
Pentium 4, 2.8.
and a PM 2.0 is like using a P4 3.0+.

There are two general types of Intel CPU: Pentium M and Pentium D
(Pentium D used to be called Pentium 4). M is the mobile version, D
is the desktop version which is still sometimes used in laptops.

Celeron is a budget, lower-performance version of either chip. So
Celeron M is a cheap knock-off of a Pentium M. (That's what you mean
by "Intel M" I take it.)

Pentium M gives roughly the same performance (give or take) at half
the clock frequency as Pentium D. The same goes for the Celerons. So
a Celeron M 1.3GHZ is roughly equivalent to a Celeron D 2.6GHZ.

Celeron will be a slower than Pentium at the same clock frequency. I
don't know a multiplier, but just assume a 1.3GHZ Pentium M is faster
than a 1.3GHZ Celeron M. Pentium M will also be more power efficient
than Celeron M and should give longer battery life.
