Protect files from RansomWare

Since anti-virus software is not effective protection from RansomWare is using a cloud backup like Carbonite, etc or combination of that and removable storage like a thumb drive or external hard drive a better way to go?

Yup. You nailed it right there. Keep anti virus around though, it helps prevent some malware from getting installed in the first place.

backup are important too, never know when the disk might fail.
usually the more important the data is, the more backup you want, store it in different location, different media, etc.
