I wasn't really expecting to be able to purchase a gaggle of them, but thanks for the info Vampyrbyte. It did seem like a good idea, but in a world where you can buy a Sempron 140 for thirty bucks, a really expensive, probably hard-to-fab cell processor looks less like a sure thing. At least Sony started seeing some return on the PS3, but lets hope there are actually some good games for it. The PS2 had an embarrassment of riches when it came to great titles, but the PS3 (and 360) are really worse for the expense to develop for. The world needs less cross platform games, and more of the individual titles that make PS2 support important 10 years after the PS2 launched.

[citation][nom]AlexTheBlue[/nom]Sega's blast processing was real. It was a software technique, not a miracle. Just because it isn't what you thought it was, doesn't mean it isn't real. [/citation]

Alex, you are absolutely right. I didn't mean to be as critical as I sounded. The world is a better place because of Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Sega, ect. I wasn't criticizing Sony per se (or Sega for that matter). The fact is, I spend more time playing PS1 and PS2 games than PS3 games. That I play them on the PS3 is really just an indication of the paltry offerings that, while slickly presented, don't stack up to the titles of yore. Give me Sonic the Hedgehog and Blast processing any day of the week. The console space needs more ingenuity and less space marines. Church.

obvious troll is obvious

This definitely makes sense, at least in the home turf of Japan. Plenty of games are still being released for PS2; ones that don't require graphical horsepower, such as novel games.

You armchair experts are a joke!

Sony only removed hardware backwards compatibilty to cut costs and they never replaced it with software emulation because it would never be as good or reliable as having the hardware.

People mention the 360 playing old Xbox games but fail to mention that it does a bloody awful job of doing so (if you can get them to play in the first place)

If the time has come where Sony can reintroduce hardware backwards compatibility cheaper than they originally could then brilliant, that'll be one less box under my TV!

Hmm how small could they make a ps2 nowdays? My guess is small enough to bundle in a tv... now that would be awesome. Have a tv dvd combo that also plays ps2 games and has support for the ps3 bluetooth comtrollers would be sooo awesome!

Even though the PS2 graphics look really dated compared to PS3/XB360, When i laid eyes on the PS2 slim for the first time, I thought it was the coolest damn thing i ever saw.I haven't played on it for a long long time, But I'm so nostalgic about that console i still have it hooked up to another TV and i keep the games and the console looking as new as they did the day i walked in the door with them.

I never found PS3 overly appealing. Sure it has graphics on par with xbox360 and other features, but it again was typical sony overhyping a product which didn't deliver. It's a good generation to skip and hold out for the next one I guess. PS2 was overhyped as well and I saw where that one went. I picked it up after the second price drop. PS2 has some really good games I admit, but to live up to the hype the end user had to wait a few years or so for games to live up to it. Xbox360 seemed to be a bit over hyped as well and didn't deliver up to expectations at launch. I guess there is only so much that can be done.

I'm amazed how much use and abuse people's PS2 consoles get. I'm still on my first PS2 console and it is going strong. I've heard of people going through these things like crazy too. I guess if you are a hardcore console gamer, switching out discs all the time and stuff, it eventually wears out.

On the subject of Blast processing... It was real, real marketing.... No it wasn't a "software technique" what ever that means.... lol The Genesis had 2 CPU's a 68000 and a Z80, both CPU's where very old at the time and very well known. The 68000 manufactured by Motorola was the 16 bit main CPU and the Zilog Z80 was an 8 bit CPU that was used to produce sound.

The fact that they took BC out in the first place is one of the reasons why I never got a PS3. I just don't understand why companies take backwards steps like this. I said the same thing about MS and their hard drive-less 360 the other day. You make a good move, and then you cluster**** it by going backwards. It's all just pointless to me.

Glad I still have the original 60 gig. I bought Devil May Cry 3 and played it on my PS3 because I never I owned a PS2, but it looks like crap. PS2 games on a PS3 with HDTV looks like garbage. I understand the belief in having the option but it just looks horrible.

Well PS2 compatibilty is nice, but personally i kept my ps2 for the fact of ps one games. So im still stuck either way, or they make new title releases for the newer consoles.

[citation][nom]victorintelr[/nom]Didn't know that the PS3 was so modern that it couldn't handle older games.[/citation]
I guess my Windows 7 system must be way out-dated then because it runs games from 1992 without issue.

[citation][nom]drwho1[/nom]This is why I'm happy with my 60GB PS3, it was the best PS3 to date.(best hardware) I might upgrade its hard drive next year (not that I need it)[/citation]
Same here. I love my original PS3, even more since I swapped the 60GB hard drive for a 250GB about a year ago.

I think it's been a good tactic for them, removing the backward compatibility. It's helped keep PS2 sales, they're still able to keep squeezing sales out of it.

I personally prefer to have it out, so I can have my PS2 seperate. The reason being, I can mod a PS2 to remove region-lock. That way with that setup, I can play PS1/PS2/PS3 games from all regions.

So this is the gaming industry's answer to improved longevity? We're gonna go back in time and rip off the Franken-Genesis model? I can't wait for the add-on that looks like a toilet (a la Atari Jaguar CD)!

Now, in all seriousness, if they don't charge at least the same amount or less than the current price of a PS2, then they can give up any hope of actually selling this product, unless their plan is to actually stop production of the PS2 as soon as this accessory comes out, forcing people who might actually want to get the system (either again or for the first time) to buy a PS3 as well.

Wouldn't actually be a bad plan. Plus I'm also a fan of the long term of support they've given the system, Genesis and SNES had no support post the year after their successors launched, since I never owned the PS2 during it's generation, I've had a blast building up my library of games $2-5 at a time (with a few exceptions for some hard to find titles) for some A-list titles of the time. for the 63 games I have right now I've spent a total of $550. Thats less than $10 a game, inversely if I were to take that same cash to buy current gen offerings I'd only get about 10 games lol.

However I see no justification for myself to buy into this as I already have a PS2 Bulky and the PS3 really doesn't offer anything other than like 3 games I have interest in that I can't get on PC. And none of them are first person shooters before some fanboy starts listing off "great games" that comprise of FPS's or TPS's. Otherwise most everything I've got interest in has a PC version, and that's what I have a gaming rig for. That and emulation of a number of systems.
