I am considering signing up with one of two monthly-prepaid,
no-contract wireless providers. They both use the Sprint PCS network
and offer the Sanyo 4700 and 4900 among their phone choices (the
lowest-cost choices, in fact). I suppose offering discontinued models
is one way they are able to keep plan costs down, but I understand
these phones are excellent performers for voice calls, which is by far
my main priority.

My question is in regards the speakerphone. I notice in searching old
posts to this group that people have suggested that clipping the 4700
to the car's sun visor and using the speakerphone works pretty well as
a de facto handsfree setup. Perhaps it just never happened to come up
in discussions, but I see no mention of this practice for the 4900. I
know the speaker is in the back of both phones, but was there some
difference vs. the 4700 that made the sun visor idea less practical
for the 4900?

Thanks.

Those phones are excellent for reception and speakerphone capability.
The main differences are the 4900 has a color screen and Vision
capability. The 4900 uses the same car charger and USB cable as most of
the current model Sanyos which means you could find low priced
"Sanyo/GE" products at TARGET stores.
