Questions regarding 4dtv for a completely uninformed guy.

Are any of the channels High Definition?
Is there a listing that gives a description of the 298 free channels?
What languages?
Any of the channels local?
Can I get direct feeds for sporting events?
Do I need to get any sort of subscription to get the free channels.

Thanks
Taco

There is a list of channels at http://www.4dtv.com/Xcel/xcel.htm
The list is not 100% accurate, but it is close.

The digital side of the 4DTV will need to be authorized to receive any
digital channels, but a minimal subscription to anything will take care
of that. Free analog channels will require no subscription.

There are some analog sports backhauls are on Ku-Band.

It needs to be subscribed to receive even the FTA DCII channels?

I plan on having a fixed dish pointing at 99o and a 922 just to pick up
Goodlife. I don't see anything I could sub to on X4 (although the 4dtv
website lists Bloomberg and a few others as sub, Lyngsat lists it all as
Hits, which I assume we can't sub to).

Should I just give up on Goodlife?

Thanks
Dave

Goodlife TV is available on 4DTV with a Ku-Band LNB on X4/603.It is NOT
a free to air channel in DC2 mode.It is a SUBSCRIPTION channel available
through NPS (National Pro-
gramming service) available in their 'Absolute Digital package' (that is
how I get it anyway...there might be others).
It is part of the HITS suite (Headend-In-The-Sky) although not all of
the HITS channels are available by 4DTV.But,Goodlife IS....if you want
it,it is there.
There are rumors and speculations that NPS is trying to negotiate
additional carriage of HITS channels on 4DTV.When and if that occurs is
anyone's guess.

Authorization is not the same thing as a subscription. The receiver
can be authorized without being subbed to anything.

It does not need to be subscribed, The receiver must be authorized
to receive DCII. I do not know if the receiver will receive authorization
hits from X4. Once it is authorized if the authorization expires there
is a chance that it will not receive the hits needed to bring it back
to life.

I guess I can write Goodlife and ask them if thay have the facilities to
send an authorization signal.
Or I can always set up a second 30" dish, point it at another Ku bird, and
subscribe to something. Would that work?

Thanks!
Dave

It is not a subscription channel. The authorization status = U, which means
that any 4DTV that has been authorized for digital programming can receive
it. If it was a subscription channel the auth status would be S (subscribed) or
NS (not subscribed).

Ok,DRLev.....I stand corrected on the meaning of the "U" designation. It
is available I guess without a subscription.

Goodlife is not the uplinker. Contacting them would accomplish nothing
they probably would have no idea what you are talking about.

Possibly you could call NPS and ask them if the X4 HITS channels sends
authorization hits. I have been hoping that somebody that may have a Ku
only setup may see this thread and know if X4 sends hits.

DRLev......I thought Goodlife TV was a subscription channel only because
I purchase the Discovery suite from NPS and I thought that the X4
channel group was part of it.But since you said it was part of a basic
authorization and not a subscription channel specifically, would not any
program authorizing agent dealing in DC2 signal acquisition be able to
do this? Not just NPS,but the Superstar/Netlink/Turner conglomerate too?
And barring any complications where this did not work, the IPG people at
Gemstar/TV Guide contacted through the GI/Motorola consumer division (I
had to do that once)?
My confusion on thinking that Goodlife was subbed through NPS stemmed
in part because the GSN (Game Show Network) channel (X4/643) IS
subscribed through NPS only and I thought the other adjacent Ku-Band
channels were similarly authorized.
I guess I am going to have to check the channel information screens
better. Not to mention the fact that I did not know what "U" meant,so
thanks. All I knew about that channels that were in the clear that were
DC2 were "ZK" channels.Interesting.

Auth status = U means that any receiver authorized within the
correct network for that channel can receive it.

U = Universal

In DCII there are 3 or 4 consumer networks (possibly more).

4DTV
HITS
StarChoice
Voom

Each uplinker is also considered a separate network, but they
do not do consumer level authorizations.

If a channel is U status for a given network it can be received
by any receiver authorized within that network. It will not be
received by receivers in other networks unless that network
also includes it in their Universal authorizations. A 4DTV cannot
receive authorizations from any network other than 4DTV. The
providers do not specifically authorize the receiver to receive
Goodlife. All 4DTV receive authorization from the GI/Mot Authorization
Control Center. If the receiver is authorized by the ACC to receive
digital channels it will receive Goodlife.

There are 4 pages on the list. There are tabs on the bottom. You must be looking at
the "Updates" page.
