Is there a way to quiet the ringer while the phone is closed? I've got
the phone set up to answer when I open it so accessing the 'quiet
ringer' option via the menu isn't possible. From what I see in the
manual it doesn't describe any other way to do this.

Thanks.

The RL2500 which is essentially the same phone has no way to make the
ringer operate differently open as opposed to closed.

Not sure if this is quite what you're asking, but on most phones
pressing any external button, such as the volume control will make the
phone stop ringing. The call will continue "ring" silently until you
either answer or the call times out and directs to voicemail.

That's what I was going to suggest. Works on my VM4500.
