Ram Pairing

I understand DDR3 RAM has to be paired up with an identical chip, but if a computer has 4 RAM slots, can I have one pair of 4GB chips and one pair of 2GB chips?

yes but what laptop has four slots?

also the speed and timing of the two pairs have to match.

The Clevo P151HM, It has two slots at the bottom and two under the keyboard. Thanks, the speed was different even though the other set had the same CAS latency!
Just saved me $50 bucks!!!
