VAT, Insane Gas taxes - That's the price for things like universal healthcare, cheap post HS education, etc. As to the 44% increase in base price, there are other market forces at play. Otherwise, it seems customers would simply buy one from a US based store, and pay the shipping to EU, certainly it would be cheaper than 44% if it's just that simple.
