I have an old Realistic STA-430 Stereo Reciver. When I set it to FM, the speakers get nice and loud. However, when I turn it to AUX (where I have my turn table connected to) the speakers are a ton quieter. I don't even know where to being to look to resolve the issue. I know for sure that both speakers work.

Thanks!!
Sean

This is normal. The aux setting is a low impedance 1V PEP input standard, designed to accommodate a range of devices, whereas the turntable should be connected to Phono on your amplifier ... it is a high impedance input designed for low input voltage.

Placing a low voltage device with high impedance output onto a low impedance input device results in poor signal input ... hence the low volume. On the bright side there will be very little distortion.

To play vinyl you need a phone preamp somewhere (could be in the turntable, an external box or in your case in the receiver).
This additional circuitry boosts the output of the cartridge (which might be 2-5mv as compared to 2v on most sources) but also provides the RIAA EQ that is required for all phone playback. The phone input of the receiver would have both the gain and EQ needed. A line level input would have neither.

You need to hook your turn table to the Phono RCA input jacks in the back. Most likely your turntable has a magnetic style needle cartridge. I agree with the low 1 V input impedance . Where the Phono inputs will have a much higher impedance to balance with the magnetic needle cartridge on the turntable. Tape Players, CD players. I pods. Iphones, smart phones ( with proper cord) can be connected to the Aux or tape RCA inputs in the back of the Receiver..
