can anyone reccommend a laptop for me that has the following: under $700. Good graphics card and CPU with at least 4meg ram and 500 hard drive. Will use for playing games such as World of Warcraft and playing music and chatting at same time. It is for my son so budget is fairly firm. Best suggestions for money please

any brands of laptops or cpus to stay away from. I understand that I should stay away from integrated graphics cards and also intel graphic cards in general...

How about Gateway? Any issues with them? I found a Gateway with

AMD Turion II Ultra Dual-Core M600 2.4GHz processor
4GB DDR2 memory
320GB hard drive
Preloaded Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit operating system
ATI Radeon HD 4200 Graphics
DVD Super-Multi Dual Layer optical drive
802.11b/g/n wireless
15.6-inch HD widescreen Ultrabright LED-backlit display

For under $600? Would this be good for running World of Warcraft, playing music and chatting at same time?

Hello bnpifer;

Acer Aspire AS5742G $600
Core i3 380M(2.53GHz) CPU. 4GB RAM 500GB HDD 15.6" 1366x768 LCD w/ GeForce GT 540M graphics.

Acer Aspire AS5742G review not configured with the same CPU or video card but should be the same in all other areas.

The i3-380 CPU is a small upgrade over the Asus i3-350M and quite a large upgrade over the Gateway M600 CPU.
Passmark CPU benchmark scores:
AMD Turion II Ultra Dual-Core Mobile M600 = 1500
Intel Core i3 380M @ 2.53GHz = 2348

The GT 540M is a pretty good bump up in graphics power over the HD 5470s mentioned earlier. It will be very good in WoW.

I just won an ebay auction for a Toshiba Satellite quad core L855D-S5220 A8-4500m 6gb ddr3 with Radeon 7640G graphics & 650 gb hard drive and windows 7 in very good condition for [$280 and $15 shipping]!!! (you have to do quite a bit of research on ebay, the seller's rating, return policy, the fine print of what Exactly you are getting, how to snipe auctions, etc!!) If you are patient you can get what you want there! Took me a little over of week of methodically doing research, checking newegg, fry's, walmart, tomshardware, notebookcheck.net, and peer reviews of different brands to familiarise myself with whats what out there and what all of the techno-jargon means with memory types, finding out that the HP's dv6 and dv8 series might seem attractive but always overheat, and how intel stacks up vs amd in terms of price and power. Oh yeah, I like to find a laptop model or graphics card model and type that into youtube along with the word skyrim or some other highly demanding game to see what people have posted there, they will tell you all about their system, how many frames per second, thats also a pretty good resource.

Regards-
