I have two Advent 5002 speakers that I bought in college way back when. They are in excellent condition and I want to use them again. They're fine for me, they're paid for, and they're what I can afford. I want to play music from my iPhone, and maybe a CD player, out of these so I'll have decent music in my house again. What do I need in order to be able to do that? I am not familiar with any of the receivers that are on the market. Finding one on Craigslist is fine with me but I'd like some guidance on what to get or not get.

First of all the Advent 5002's are nice speakers! Due to the age, you may want to check the capacitors on the crossover because they may have dried out. Even upgrading them to a better cap can improve the sound, plus it isn't hard to do and will only cost a few dollars. Also check the foam surrounds since they degrade.

Second, there are many brands that make good receivers(or top receiver brands). Also, if you don't need the tuner, you can consider an integrated amp.

Check out some stereo stores that sell used equipment or even a thrift store since your just playing music out of your phone. You can probably pick up a decent receiver for 25 bucks.

Be seeing you, the Prisoner...
