Hi all

I am desparately trying to restore the files on my WD passport external hard drive, as it contains all the admin for a group i run, as i accidently entered the wrong password and reformatted it instead of the other hard drive I had just plugged into my computer

Using Recuva, I have been able to find a .tmp file that is 1gb in size - it's too big to open in word or anything. Does anyone know if there is a way of opening it to find out what is inside, or extracting the contents (I am hoping it contains what was on the external hard drive)

Help please

Why o why was there not a backup of this?

But anyway....
What software was running this group admin data? 1GB sounds like it might be a database file of something.

I only received this hard drive of data yesterday, my plan was to copy contents onto my hard drive - and i have another external hard drive next to me that I use for backups

a bit confused here.

'yesterday'
'files on my WD passport external hard drive, as it contains all the admin for a group i run, '

In any case, what else have you tried apart from Recuva?
How did the drive become corrupted?

I was given the incorrect password to the drive, when I entered the password I got a message that the wrong password had been entered too many times and the drive had to be reformatted.

I have not yet tried anything else

So this drive and/or data was encrypted? Hence, the password?

If so, you are almost certainly out of luck.
Encrypted data, that was then formatted, is gone gone gone.

Thats sort of the whole point of encryption.

Most WD Passport drives are encrypted via the enclosure.

And without the original password....

-------------------
Reformatting the drive will erase all the data on the unit, as well as remove the password from the drive.

Note: - Formatting the drive will erase all data on the drive and is not recoverable
