Remapping RTV channels in a 4000 unit??

I would like to be able to remap any channels on my 4040. I believe that I
have the ReplayTV software version 4.30.

I've searched the web and I haven't been able to find much on this subject.
I get the feeling that people either do not need to remap channels, or the
replay unit is somewhat difficult to access.

I've searched the AVS site and found one thread on the subject that's about
two years old (concerning httpfs.exe), but I was wondering if anything new
has developed on this subject.

It's my understanding that the file "httpfs.exe" can retrieve the necessary
file that contains the channel information. It's also my understanding this
file will not work properly in a ReplayTV that has version 4.30. Is this
still true, or has there been an improved version of "httpfs.exe" that can
operate in ver.4.30? Where can I find the "httpfs.exe" file? I can't seem to
locate a version to download.

I understand that "extract_rtv" is capable of extracting files, but the hard
drive has to be removed from the replay unit and installed into my computer.
I haven't read too much on the "extract_rtv" subject, so I'm not sure if all
of the files are downloaded, or if certain ones can be chosen. However, I'm
really not that interested in this method, mainly because of the hassles and
time surrounding this method, especially if this needs to happen several
times.

Basically, I would like to easily access this replay file that contains the
channel information, so that I can make any necessary changes.

What do you mean "remap"? Wirns allows you to make a custom program
guide but I don't know if it supports the 4000.

DVArchive is THE program for networked RTVs which allows moving of files
to your PC as well as conflict resolutions, remote control, streaming to
and from the PC to the RTV and vice versa as well as many other cool
features.

When a device will look in another place for it's information, instead of
it's expected/normal location.

Sometimes a device, like an older cable box, displays a channel one way
while the replay unit will show the channel as being located at another
position. Normally, a person can contact ReplayTV and request a channel
change, but replay will not change it unless they have information this is
affecting more than one or two people. From my understanding, this must
affect hundreds or thousands of people before replay will make the changes.

There was a way for a person to extract the file that contains the channel
information and change the channel location. In other words, let's say that
the Discovery Channel is being displayed in my area on channel 36, but an
older cable box shows the Discovery Channel on channel 53. If a person can
access the file stored within the replay unit, the person can make the
change where the replay will tune to channel 53 to view the Discovery
Channel instead of channel 36.

I understand the program and what it can do for video files, but my rough
understanding has that it can't access the channel file, so that remapping
can be performed. You did get me thinking that I might visit the site, and
drop the author a request to see if this can be done and incorporated into a
future version.

From what I understand, a program called "httpfs.exe" could download the
channel file, so that a person can make the remap changes. The file could
also upload the file back into the replay unit, and then the replay unit
would recognize the remapped channel(s). The only problem was it only able
to access the file with "httpfs.exe" through a flaw within the ReplayTV
software version 4.10. The flaw was reported to have been covered up with
the software release of 4.30. I haven't been able to locate a copy of this
EXE file to test it.

ReplayTV, SonicBlue, nor DDNA govern the guide data and channel
mappings, so actually you could complain to them all you want.

This would be helpful if you said who did.

Also, Replay (or whichever company produces the software) has some
control over mapping (what happens when you have multiple sources).

It's my understanding, from reading other web forums dealing with replays,
that if you are the only person that needs a special channel guide, they
will not do it. If I lived in an area, like a campus, where a special guide
is needed for a large group of people, they will supposedly create a special
guide.

It would have been great if replay could have allowed a normal remapping
feature within their software. I've seen where other people have needed or
wanted this feature, but the 4.30 software version that replaced 4.10 has
supposedly covered up the access to the file. I don't think it was
intential.

I was hoping that another access hack had been discovered to getting to this
file. Trust me, it would be a valuable tool that would be used by many
people.

They buy the data from zap2it.com
See my other post for several other on-line vendors of guide data, you
coudl use your own tools to download such data and morph it to your
liking.

I am leaving the remainder of John;s post 'cuz i liked it and it
applies. As for Sam's question of multiple sources, this has been a
point of minor irritation for me

Downstairs I have a Digital box plugged in to line 1 of my RTV.
As you may be aware there is not really any quality in the signal for
channels 2-78 coming out of your cable box versus using your RTV
internal tuner -- yet all my internal tuner channels have been remapped
to 1002 - 1078.

I would prefer that those channels <78 be tuned via internal, not the
cable box - leaving the box free to tune a cable-only channel.

Alas the best I can do is remove channels 2-78 (which point to the cable
box) and remeber when upstairs my NBC affiliate is 07, but downstairs it
is 1007.

I don't have the space or words today to further explain why I wish it
to work that way, but in my ind it is justified. Unforuntately it
doesn't.

As far as my cable provider remapping FX and WGN, sure it might take a
few days for ZAP2IT to update their database and it trickle down to RTV
servers and then out to my RTV.
