[citation][nom]Razor512[/nom]for me, I have used the iphone 4 and also the HP touchpad, and I can say for sure that video looks better on the HP touchpad even though the ppi is much lower (9.7 inch IPS screen running at 1024x768)The color quality and calibration is just much better in terms of video quality, (it is closer to a decent HDTV than the iphone 4 is (though both are very far from the color quality of a decent HDTV )At the average distance you hold a tablet, you wont notice the pixels much especially when watching video. For me with the iphone 4, I can still see the pixels clearly so to me is is not true retina, but it does make text look very good (when properly zoomed to easier to read levels)While I don't that a display of 2048x1536 is needed, I would love to have a tablet with it, an if possible I would like a 9.7 inch tablet with a 4K resolution display. It is good to have ample resolution for your content as it allows for a more functional displayFor example, if the ipad 3 gets this display, you will be able to zoom-fit most desktop OS under RDP on the ipad screen without having to scroll and still see everything clearly.Photos will get a more high quality printout look (especially if the view angles remain good)And it wont really have any downsides because the resolution can be lowered. If a game cant run at 2048x1536, then you can run it at 1024x768 with no problemIt is good to have the resolution there if needed and i hope that someday this will make a move to the desktop PC market. I want a 22 inch 4K display or possibly a 30 inch 8K display.[/citation]
You said you have used the IPhone 4 (which sounds like you do not own one) and also the HP Touchpad. I have both the IPhone 4 and the HP Touchpad with both WebOS and Cyanogenmod 7 dual booted on it. I have to say, looking at both rights in front of me that what you’re saying is a complete and total lie. No offense but you clearly did not compare both devices side by side at the same time. Also, you are comparing a 3.5inch screen to a 9.7inch screen. If you really did at one point use each one you are probably just enjoying watching a movie on the larger screen which is total understandable. I sense that you are making up the stuff about seeing pixels though. That definitely did not happen unless you had a counterfeit IPhone 4 or something. Also, there is no way to calibrate the Touchpads screen and video playback is only accomplished through the use of a player like Kalimsoft or something.
I am sorry, no offense if you are seeing pixilation on the IPhone 4 screen during video playback it is probably the video itself. On a 3.5 inch screen at 326ppi you have to look through a microscope to see the pixels. The Touchpad has 132 ppi spread out on a 9.7 inch screen.
4K resolution on a 9.7inch display is worthless. You will see no benefit and will probably lay waste to your battery life. Much in the same way that 1080p is pretty much useless for anything less than a 40inch displays. No really way to see the benefit on that screen size. The Retina resolution is not what makes Retina what it is, it is the PPI.
Your way out there with these 4k and 8k displays at the sizes you mentioned.. The day may come when they are available but the unless the PPI is greatly increased and the image sizes go through the roof to support the resolution it will be completely worthless. Do you have any idea how much storage it takes to store a 1 hour film at 4k resolution? We are talking about 4096×3072 resolution here. Let’s not even get into 8k which is basically 4320 progressive. There is a reason why the 4k TV examples are always shown on massive TV’s.
