ReplayTV not changing to local channels after DirecTV upda..

Since DirecTV's last update (6/7/05) I have been unable to switch to
local channels through my ReplayTV. They come up on the program guide
and I can switch to them via satellite receiver/controller, but not
through ReplayTV. I contacted DirecTV and the "advanced support" told
me the the new update disabled the low speed data port which I use.
They hoped to have it taken care of soon, but offered no immediate
solution. (I have a DirecTV D10 receiver that does not use an IR
blaster, but a serial port from the ReplayTv and an adaptor that allows
it to plug into the low speed data port on the DirecTV receiver. It's
called a RJ11-9 adaptor or something like that.) Has anyone else
experienced this? Any suggestions. The IR blaster does not work with
the D10 so that is not an option.

The serial connector on the Replay is a DE9 (often incorrectly called
DB9) male. The connector on newer DTV receivers is usually a RJ22
(often incorectly called RJ11, but that's dfferent). The Replay
provides the appropriate adapter (as well as a DE9-DA15 adapter for
older DSS receivers). Note that only 2 wires are actually needed (TxD
and ground).

My setup is a RCA DRD420RE DSS receiver connected by serial port. This
one uses a RJ22 like yours. It still selects channels with the serial
port. Apparently, your receiver got a firmware update. It is possible
to reverse a firmware update, but that requires some hardware work
and isn't easy.

I noticed that you said LOCAL channels (numbers < 100?), not the
others. I might suspect a problem with the number of digits, but the
serial port sends the channel number as a 16-bit binary value, so that
wouldn't be the problem.

When you set up the receiver, you get to choose "serial control" or
"serial control (APG)". Have you tried both?

What is the problem with the IR blaster? Does this receiver use RF
instead of IR for remote control? If you can't use it with the Replay,
you might consider exchanging it for a model that does.

It's weird, it is just the local channels that I cannot get the
ReplayTV to change to. Everything else is fine.

As far as the IR blaster, customer service told me that there are
several D10 receivers, the D10 100 (often called just D10), the D10 200
and D10 300. I have the D10 (100) and they said the serial adaptor is
necessary. And that worked fine and still does, except for the local
channels due to the update. I used the serial control (APG) per
customer service instructions.

what do you mean the IR blaster does not work? If you wanted to , you can
hook the D10 to the IR Blaster(which is connected to the ReplayTV) and it
>should< work. I assume you have a newer model ReplayTV (not a Showstopper
or 2000 model) otherwise the D10 doesn't work at all with the serial port.

All the people with Replays and Tivos are bitching up a storm so Direct
is working on it. It should be fixed, but don't hold your breath. A lot
of people are being given credits to get different receivers. Somebody
posted on the Replay forum at avsforums.com with a hack he worked out to
get it fixed.

I read more about this in another forum, and it seems that the update
basically screwed up the serial connection when changing channels to locals
only.

I assume this firmware has been added to support the new sats coming out
and also the Galaxy 95 sat which uses a Linear LNB. I've also read of some
new screensaver feature that can't be turned off, but I highly doubt that
could slip through the cracks.

If you can't use IR blaster, then looks like the D10 is now incompatible
with the ReplayTV .
ReplayTV should step up and provide some sort of update to fix this.

DirecTV has never claimed compatibility with ReplayTV, only ReplayTV has.

ReplayTV should be able to add the IR codes for a D10 receiver, if its
technically impossible then fine...otherwise, they should at least provide
IR support.

You don't seem to "get it". Direct did not "change" their serial codes,
they screwed them up. If you think Replay or Tivo are going to do a work
around for somebody else's engineering mistakes, you're crazy.

In any case it doesn't matter since Dosman on the AVSforum added a
routine to the translator he sells (www.patersontech.com)
