"Retina display" is the dumbest marketing notion ever! IMO. First of all the retina is part of the human sight. It captures the image. It doesn't generate it. And the display is on the opposite site. If they say: we have built in a camera with a retina sensor, that would make sense. But "retina display" that's a bullshit!

BTW... do you know that the resolution of the retina is about 4000x4000 (if I'm not mistaken). So Apple's "Retina crap" is not by far of a retina quality.

And even if "retina display" would make any sense. What does it mean? 200dpi, 300dpi, 5000dpi, 100000dpi?

The retina term is intended to represent the resolution, taking into account distance from the eye, at which the retina is unable to distinguish individual pixels, and instead sees a smooth curve.

For a mobile phone, which you hold relatively close to your eyes, the DPI required for the retina not to distinguish pixels is about 300 DPI.

For tablets, since you hold them a bit further back, it's probably around 250 DPI.

The reason this is consistent with your stated retina resolution of 4000 x 4000 is that the iPad or the iPhone don't take up your whole eyesight. If you hold your phone in front of you, it is probably only about 1/50th of your entire field of vision - so it doesn't have to be the full 4,000 x 4,000 on its own.

Hope this helps 🙂

And yet, most low/mid-range laptops are still getting crappy 15.6" 1366x768 TN screens... unsuitable even for a movie (as they really distort colors depending on viewing angle).

I hope all this push for betters screens in tablets, brings us serious improvements in computers as well.

[citation][nom]otacon72[/nom]It will always be an oversized iTouch that doesn't run a real OS or run real software. I'll be getting a W8 tablet next year so while the iSheep will be playing Angry Birds in a higher resolution I'll be getting stuff done running real software.[/citation]

Sure thing chief. So what kind of real work would you be doing on your W8 tablet?

I'm betting, Angry Birds, checking facebook and gmail, a bit of porn, more angry birds and checking up on Jersey Shore. Cause those are things that no tablet can do... today.

I'm hoping for a device that I can actually program and debug for on the device itself.

So what content will be displayed at that resolution?

Currently the majority of HD video is 1920x1080, so the extra pixels are a bit of a waste

Displaying photos at that resolution is only 3 and a bit MP, so the pics from the 5MP camera are not enough pixels

I suppose the extra resolution will allow more screen top icons?

Also, and this is the real rub, that resolution is still 4:3 aspect ratio, where is the widescreen aspect that almost every modern video is filmed in, including TV shows, sure the screen will still show the video but either with black bars, cropping or crazy-stretching.

Apple says "Think Different", it's not too late to make the iPad a different aspect ratio, max it out at 1080P and still deliver a major improvement

[citation][nom]watcha[/nom]I challenge you to find one mainstream productivity task which you CAN'T do on an iPad or iPhone. It's unbelievably naive and misinformed to think that there is anything lacking in the productivity side on iPhones / iPads - you clearly just don't have a clue.[/citation]
Microsoft Office

[citation][nom]Soul_keeper[/nom]"Retina display" is exciting to meI wish they'd get this pixel density on the desktop, I'd throw down the $$$[/citation]

No shit, Retina level on the desktop will change monitors. OSX has now and I believe Windows 8 will have resolution independence which basically means that High resolution does not have to change to size of the icons. Basically just increase the pixel density and make desktop/icon size adjustable through granular user preferences.

[citation][nom]Lyrick[/nom]I'm hoping for a device that I can actually program and debug for on the device itself.[/citation]

Why would you want to do that? A desktop/laptop with a physical keyboard and significant horsepower is the way to go for development..

[citation][nom]allenpan[/nom]264 ppi is rentia, why? b/c it is magical and apple say so...LOL[/citation]

Tablets are held on further distance from the eyes than phones. So the pixel's angular size can still be considered "retina". The iPhone display is "retina class" when held at distance 12 inches (30cm) which is quite close when compared to typical tablet distance. So, yes, I would call it retina display.

I love the idea of pushing the resolution, with these devices getting higher pixel densities, they will push the production of UHD TV's and Monitors (Ultra HD, aka 4k) because they flog 23"/24" 1920x1080 displays at incredible rates, Just start making UHD/4K/Quad HD more commercially and economically viable for end users. Currently the 4096x2160 resolution can be packed onto a 36" with only 127 ppi! with the technology out there for far greater pixel densities, how an this not find its way to your 24" monitors??? I love my eyefinity 5760x1080 for MW3 but imagine the 4k resolution and how that will impact your computers performance!

Good for apple, getting a high resolution display into their next generation tablet. It should compete well with the 1080p android tablets that will likely beat it to market, and we all know that competition is good for us consumers.

And I wish the fanboys would quit it with the "apple's iPhone 4 was revolutionary in it's resolution" or that people thought the difference between the 3GS and the 4 was minimal. No serious user felt that the 4's quadrupling in resultion was unnecessary, the problem is that serious users already had high resolution displays long before the iPhone 4, in the form of windows mobile (not WP7, I'm referring to VGA Windows Mobile devices) and android devices. I'd say going from the 480x320 display to 640x480 (windows mobile) was revolutionary, or to 800x480 of android devices. Going from 800x480 to 960x640 is hardly perceptible during normal usage, let alone revolutionary.

So once again, android and apple users will have similar hardware, with only minor differences between them. The fewer differences between their hardware, means more innovation in software, and more competition on pricing. The only people who don't want tablets to become cheaper simply use them as status symbols, and likely don't even know how to use a quarter of their tablet's potential.

"The analyst consensus suggests that Apple will be quadrupling the resolution of the iPad display from 1024x768 to 2048x1536 pixels"

correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't that just doubling?

[citation][nom]back_by_demand[/nom]Microsoft Office[/citation]
You failed.

Citrix Receiver on Apple iPad (look up youtube video with that title)

Yes, there is an APP for that. There is a free and paid version.

[citation][nom]jldevoy[/nom]Hazro do 2560x1440 for $700, panels are very nice but very few features.[/citation]
Other than being a MONITOR what other features are needed? My 24" monitor is great at what it does. I turn it on, I turn it off.
