hi out there!
does anybody know how to play .rm files or .ram files WITHOUT real plyer, because real player is for me one of the most anoying software i know.

i have tried newplay 4 but it does only play the files when real player is installed.

thank you for all your answers in advance!

Unfortunately, it's an license issue that .rm/.ram files can only be played with real player engine installed. In other words, you must install real player first before you can use any other software that plays .rm/.ram files.

At the moment i have chosen not to have real player installed, as it is very annoying. But if you do need to install, ALWAYS choose 'Custom installation' and slowly, carefully untick every option you don't need (especially anything that connects to the internet).
I then always go into Real player itself, into the options/preferences, and check it has followed my instructions. Sometimes the b*&^$£ still ticks things again.
I THEN use msconfig (download from a google search if you don't have it) to make sure Real Player doesn't autoload on startup.

It STILL somehow manages to re-enable itself from time to time despite all this, so also make sure your firewall (ZoneAlarm is a good one) denies access to Real player.

It really is a pain!

Technically? Of course that's possible. Windows Media player will play any files, given the right codec to decompress.

But will Real Networks allow their codec to wander free around the internet to be downloaded? Will they b&^$^*£s.

You could try going to http://download.com and do a search to see if their is a program.

hm searched the web for the codec, nothing, well that was pretty obvious.
by the way,its nice that real player is not only annoying me....
but i hd an idea wich is a lot of work, but i should be ok doing it.
just load your rm files into adobe premiere and export them as avi,as for the 3 files i have tried it,there is no quality loss visible, but this could be because the files have been futurama episodes, and comics dont need so much resolution.

but still, beeing capable of playing rm files without Real Player would be the better way.
there has to be a way of deinstalling realplayer(the programm) but keeping the codec "alive"....

so long...

Can you load rm files into Premiere? I didn't know you could. I know you can export them from Premiere, but that's not the same thing. The only time I tried though I didn't have Real player installed, so MAYBE if you install Real player, then import into Premiere, then convert to something else, that could work.
Keep it legal though please.

I know this is way late, but I'd just like to give some props to realalternative. It basically just feeds media player the rm codec. It's so freaking easy to play rm files now, go to hell real one player :p
