Rotted Criterions?

I picked up a formal rental of Criterion's "Great Escape" from a local
shop here in Seattle. I was shocked (well, shocked is sort of a strong
word ~ let's say surprised) to find some of that good old blue
speckling abouth halfway in on the first platter.

This was, like I said, a former rental (although still in very nice
shape). Chances are, things like direct sunlight, temperature control,
etc., were not concerns during this LD's life. Further, this is a
fairly old Criterion. . . . . but still, Criterion rot . . ????

I am wondering if anyone else has seen this show up on Criterion discs,
especially in some of their older (that is, relative to their last few
years of LDs) catalog titles.

BTW, seeing this scratchy, semi-blurry transfer made me appreciate what
the DVD version has done with this film. Granted, a cleaned-up LD
transfer would probably look very nice, but . . . well, we've come a
long way, baby.

If it were not for the extras (esp. that commentary track), it would
hardly be worth the trouble . . . hence, not a too-tragic case of rot .
.. .

Further research has told me that some of these came from the dreaded
'DADC' plant. I'll have to check my copy when I get home. The rot
makes sense, now.

Ding ding ding.

Scarecrow it is. They have always been good about keeping LDs with
exclusisve content in the rental section. It seems they have recently
changed that policy ~ some Criterions / collectors' discs have ended up
in their sale heap. Prices pretty cheap ~ that Great Escape LD was ~
$15.

I still rent LDs there on occasion, although I am guessing I am one of
the very few.

Just out of curiousity, where did you pick up the disc? Half-price on
Cap. hill has had at least eight record bins full of LDs whenever I go
to thumb through. The other locations (with exception of lynnwood(?) and
the U-district .. I've not been to either) have nearly nothing.

Probably at Scarecrow.

Lynnwood had about 100 or so.
Choices include Steamboat Bill Jr, some Charlie Chaplins,
All Quiet On The Western Front, Rumble Fish,
plus the usual Jurassic Park/Die Hard/Indiana Jones/BTTF etc.
The U-district store has a few, but nothing worth a special trip,
although you can triple up by visiting Scarecrow and Videophile also.
Bellevue Crossroads is hit-and-miss. Sometimes none at all.
Sometimes a few, rarely very much, an occasional gem.
Redmond has had the same tired stock for months.
Capitol Hill always has the best selection,
and they always seem to end up with the Box Sets.
Southcenter has a few, but nothing worth a special trip.
Tacoma Mall has nothing at all.

I recently purchased a copy of the 2-disc CC edition of Lawrence of Arabia.
The worst rotter in my 170+ LD collection. Heavy speckling troughout on both
sides, both discs-end of each side so distorted (both video and audio) as to
be unplayable.

Criterion often used different plants for different press runs of a given title.

With LAWRENCE, for example, the original issues of both the CAV and CLV editions
were pressed by 3M. I've also come across CLV copies pressed by both Pioneer USA
and Kuraray. I haven't seen any CAV copies that weren't pressed at 3M.

Like everyone else, Criteron used a variety of pressing plants, even those later
identified as having a problem with rot. Even 3M had a rot problem at one point
in their LD-pressing career.

THE GREAT ESCAPE was pressed by Sony DADC, and has been known to rot. My
copy is still fine though. Other Sony-pressed Criterions that have had reports
of rot -- I may be misremembering though, and it might be that someone was just
expressing fear that they might rot -- are BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK and MONTENEGRO.

The only Criterion I've ever had rot on me was SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT, pressed
by Pioneer. Started to show the symptoms within six months. The replacement copy
has been perfectly fine.

All of the CAV copies of "Lawrence" that I've ever seen are 3M.
However, after 3M got their rot problem fixed, they repressed a bunch
of the catalog. "ET", "Lawrence" and "Some Like it Hot" all were
redone, so there are good copies to be had.

3M has had their rot problems too. When Image Entertainment was
pressing 100% of their catalog at 3M, the quality suffered. The
original release of "Dirty Dancing" was a horrible rotter.

To my knowledge, the only facility that has never had a rot problem is
Nippon Columbia out of Japan. Kuraray had some problems early on (the
initial pressings of the first widescreen "Towering Inferno" were
terrible), but the bulk of their stuff is excellent.

I am aware of the Nippon Columbia plant, but I have never seen any
titles done by them, maybe only Japanese stuff?
Kuraray, AWSOME!! never had/seen a bad disc from them out of well
over 100 titles I have on Kuraray, though I never had Towering
Inferno.

I do have a rotted Kurary, it is a 1992 REPRESSING of the Lucille Ball
Signature series title "Affairs of Annabel." It has moderate
speckling throughout. My original 1989 3M pressing of the same
release is ALSO badly rotted, so I have had no luck with this one.

Not quite only. I have four LDs pressed by Nippon Columbia, one of which is a US
release: Paul Simon's GRACELAND: THE AFRICAN CONCERT.

The three Japanese LDs I have pressed by them are SPIDER-MAN: THE DRAGON'S
CHALLENGE and two Mike Hammer TV pilot movies.

So does nattering Nabob. he received "Affairs of Annabel" last week
on a Kuraray pressing and it's flawless. As I say, I've had luck with
this one.
