So Microsoft is releasing a console that will have less computing power than the original (then 13-year-old) Xbox had... and thinks that that's a viable strategy?

I mean, the Wii (which has more power than this future Xbox will) is already 5 years old, and almost everyone who wants motion control already has one. The Kinect is cool and all, but is there really another market for a device that only plays arcade games and costs 250-300 bucks (with Kinect)?

However, that hasn't stopped people from [strike]talking about the next Xbox, rumored to be called the Xbox 720 and codenamed Durango.[/strike]

noticing the fact that this 5-year-outdated POS can barely run any new games in any next-to-decent quality.

As pointed out at another website, the current source of info isnt just full of roumors but the dude has been more than plentyfully mistaken over the info he has provided.in the past. The thing is that this which sound more stupid than ever for MS to do isnt even considered a rumor to me.

Other than Uncharted on my PS3, the 360 is the only console that offers games with optimal graphics and many times I have to chose the comfort of my 360 instead of my expensive PC gaming gear just for the resolution difference. The sad fact is that consoles do hold back the graphical advancement of games the past 10+ years and the main reason I hoped that MS would show off a new 360 already is that same reason. But I guess their statement of not doing so crashed my dreams.

Outdated POS when it comes to consoles it just isnt.XBL, the controller and the box itself is more capable overall than I expected it to be. Living proof the fact I still use it when I get a chance.

A basically PC gamer>console gamer to a typical raging "gamer". Couldnt reply more polite than that really..

It sounds to me like an ARM-based Xbox would not really be an Xbox, but rather a media console device with casual gaming as a bonus. It would really be meant to tap into a marketplace and consume media, i.e. it competes with Apple TV instead of other gaming consoles. That it has Xbox as a name would simply be Microsoft trying to take advantage of an existing brand.

The danger in this however is the confusion it will no doubt create. To avoid this they will really need to market the Xbox as being a media console and not a gaming console, and to market the ARM-based console as a "light" version.

Wake up Microsoft. The 360 is ancient and so outdated. The only people that use it anymore and little kids that can't afford a PC. And people like me that use it for Netflix and a paper weight. Come out with the next gen already or loose more life long console gamers, like myself, to the mighty PC that can produce eyegasm graphics.

What makes ppl think that if there's an ARM cpu involved it would be less powerful? ARMs are used in portable devices atm, but since ARM is just an architecture anybody can get a license for, there's no reason why somebody couldn't design a 5Ghz ARM with built in graphics comparable to a AMD 7970...It would probably consume 250W power but who cares if you're gonna use it in a console....The early ARM's were desktop processors (ARM2, ARM3 StrongARM) and quite powerhungry.

lol I know, these comments are hilarious. Gotta love desktop analysts armed with rumors and a forum to post their "thoughts".

[citation][nom]whysobluepandabear[/nom]Consoles are really ceasing to become relevant. They're literally just cheap PCs, enclosed in the same shell as the next person, to the next person. Why don't we all just agree that in 2012, your ass needs to get a gaming PC. I'm sick of hearing the money excuse - mostly because a lot of components are re-useable and able to be used for SO much more than a console. A gaming PC can be used for countless other applications than just gaming, music, or using some form of Netflix-like service. Never has PC hardware been so cheap - especially GPUs; and the CPUs are overkill for pretty much every game. So this new Xbox will probably launch around $450-600, and I cease to understand the point of it. We all know you can build a budget PC for around that price, if not less given you have some previous parts hanging around.[/citation]

nope PC gaming is not user friendly like a console. plus if PC was the only gaming system left expect to go back to the days where you needed an upgrade every 1-2 years in order to play the latest games

nice try though fanboi

Sorry, I dismiss "user friendliness" claims. Everything is simply too easy nowadays.

Even though it's easy to install a game on a PC, on the consoles is much more user friendly. Just put the media, press play and you're done.

Don't you think this is totally lame. People don't discuss about space exploration. They don't care about great technological breakthroughs or scientific discoveries. Even electrical vehicles, medical/robotic inventions don't make much impression and excitement. All that people care about is cheap and lame entertainment: consoles, games and iPhones (and I guess booze and porn).

Pfu... the ancient formula to control the serves: panem et circenses (or Bread and Circuses" or "bread and games"). That's not freedom, that's slavery: work, spend, drink, enternain, get fat and repeat until you die mindlessly.

Can tell that this is fake. The advantage of consoles is having ONE unified HW spec, so you can take advantage of the underlying HW with very low level processing routines. Nevermind the obvious compatability issues going from PPC to ARM.

for new console to success is...

1. Can browse internet. Any sites without restriction?
2. A media player with full support of all the latest audio bitstreaming 7.1?
3. Price @ $300?
4. Is also a game console?
5. Allow full emulation of all Xbox 1/Xbox 360 games.
6. I can plug whatever HDD/SSD into it. Have Card reader?
7. I can also plug all keyboard/mouse and then use it for word processing and print using it via USB/WIFI printer
8. build-in WIFI?
9. Its also a TV box damn it.

if Xbox have all those I willing to buy this over a cheap PC! IMO, for next gen console to success, it need to replace desktop/HTPC for normal casual use.

i think you missed price competative with apple tv.... which is $99

I wouldn't mind something that had the xbox hub, played minor games and used a kinect for motion control for aorund a hundred bucks, some arcade games are fun, and alot of indie games like bastion don't need heavy hardware. I'd welcome a product like this
