Is so really worth the $1500 or is there a comparable ph that will do similar?

Not sure where you see the $1,500 price, top version on Samsung's site is $1,000 https/www.samsung.com/us/smartphones/galaxy-s9/buy/s/Device/

I don't think any phone is worth nearly that much, they get stolen, broken, lost, out-dated in a year or two. Buy an S7 or S8, both perfectly good devices.
