Dust and debris can get into your Nikon DSLR camera and settle on the camera’s sensor. This will require manual cleaning and can be done fairly easily. You should use a DSLR cleaning kit. With the kit, follow these steps in order to safely clean your Nikon DSLR sensor.
Step 1:
Make sure your camera’s battery is charged and lock the mirror in place. If you do not have enough battery power, you will not be able to lock the mirror. Charge the battery if necessary.
Step 2:
Turn on the camera.
Step 3:
Go to your Setup menu and scroll down to select Clean Image Sensor.
Step 4:
You will then be given the option of cleaning at startup or shutdown of the camera, or you will be able to choose immediate cleaning. Select Clean Now and Click OK. This will clean the sensor.
Step 5:
If this does not remove dust spots, you may need to clean the sensor manually. With the lens off of the camera, go to the Setup Menu again and choose Lock Mirror for Cleaning. Then, press Start. This will lock the mirror so that you may clean the sensor.
Step 6:
Press your shutter release button to expose the sensor. Use a blower to clean the sensor.
Be very careful when cleaning the sensor in your Nikon DSLR camera. Damaging the sensor can ruin your camera. The procedure for cleaning the sensor is not difficult, but it requires great care to protect your investment.
