Samsung 3600 smart tv- lower half screen darkened

This morning we woke up to the lower half of our tv with a darker shade than the upper half. The darkness extends horizontally across the entire lower screen. We can see the picture behind it. It's 2.5 years and out of warranty. Has anyone had any experience with this?

The lower half LED (lamps?) backlit have failed, but it could be as easily as jarred backlit cables. On the harder end you may have to replace the LED driver board.

It should be a *relatively* easy DIY project if there is a geek in the house.
