I have a Samsung N145 netbook. I closed the lid to take netbook home from work, but now I cannot get it to respond. There is only the standby light on (blue) . I cannot get it to respondany other way. Has the hard drive been damaged ?

It doesn't mean the hard drive has failed. It is a problem with being in standby mode. Have you tried connecting the power adapter to see if anything happens? You could try holding down the power button forcing a shutdown and then restarting the computer. I take it that it does not respond if you press the power button or by pressing any key or swiping the touchpad.

I've powered the netbook off, and tried restarting but always seems to go into standby mode. There is no disc activity at all. However, I removed the hd and placed it into a caddy. I can read everything on it when I connect it to another computer.

I think that may point to a problem with the motherboard. Anyone else had similar problems ?

Solved it :

Did a CMOS reset.

To the right of the memory chip, there is a piece of take covering 2 round contacts (has the word reset on motherboard).
Shorted these 2 with a screwdriver.
Turn netbook on, everything running ok.

Found this fix online somewhere for another laptop problem...

Hello there morky1966,

I believe that my flatmate has the exact same issue with her Samsung NP-145.

Basically she left her computer on, the battery drained (and the laptop possibly went into hibernate) and then went away for 1 month.

She came back from holidays, tried to switch on, the blue "power" light stays on, the blue "hard drive" light also comes only but goes off after say 2 seconds. Nothing at all on the screen...

Tried connecting via VGA to a monitor in case the screen has gone but nothing either.

This is when I started Google'ing and came across this thread. Also found a similar solution on another forum:

So, now for my issue. I can't seem to work out which two contacts I need to short out with a screwdriver. Tried a few different things but no joy...

You wouldn't possibly be so kind as to take a picture and mark out the above would you?

Kind regards,
Damien.
