early CRT monitors/TVs were curved too...and the flatness of CRT Tvs was a selling point when flat crts became available

ummm yea.... curved in the wrong direction. CRT were convex curves, making the flat screen you mentioned closer to what these modern concave screens are achieving. It is about having equal distance from all points on the screen, to your eyes, and the bigger the screen the more beneficial the curve.
