That usually happens when the VCR is set to the wrong broadcasting colour system (PAL, SECAM or NTSC) for your country .

UK: PAL
USA: NTSC

It can also happen if you use component connections and either leave a cable out or mix them up. Check which connections you are using and how you connected them. Make sure you are not connecting component to composite for example.
