samsung to older sony hometheatre without digital optical input

I'm now have a new Samsung 55 inch smart TV and an older Sony home theatre receiver with out digital audio optical input, wondering if I can use digital optical cable and converter to go into the RCA plugs on the receiver to get my surround sound ?
Because when I come out of the cable box directly to the receiver the sound is out of sync with the TV audio.

In general it is better not to mix the TV sound with your HT sound.
