SB Live vs US-122 vs 1010LT

I'm using a neumann TLM-103 mic. The output is hot enough to slightly
overpower the input preamp of a TEAC 1A mixer (with onboard pads on)
feeding my SoundBlaster Live card. Don't know if the tracks I'm
slightly unhappy with (hollow mids) are result of the 1A being
overdriven or the SB card's stinky A>D. 3 questions:

1) Will the US-122 or M-audio 1010LT preamps handle the mic's output
directly without additional pads?
2) Can I expect a significant sound improvement at all using either the
122 or 1010 vs. the SB's A>D?
3) Which pre of the 2 (122 or 1010) sounds best?

(Dell Pentium III 1 ghz, XP, ATA-100 80g drive)

(I do understand the 122 is USB, the 1010 is PCI, and other distinct
features of each unit - I'm looking for best sound quality under 300
bucks).

1. yes for the 1010, never used a us-122
2. most definitely for the 1010. i went from a sb live card to the m-audio
2496 years ago and it opened new worlds, the 1010 is it's sonic equal with
more ins and outs (and it even has two balanced ins and pre's) although i
always use outboard pre's.

also with the 1010 you can record at 24 bits/96 khz, another huge leap...

DANG! Looks like 2496 and other M-audio cards are without phantom.
Next question... Is there an inexpensive way to supply phantom power
using the M-audio line of cards?

there are some small boards that are cheaper than most pre's. i have a
little behringer and IMO the pre's sound better than my blue-tube. i would
double check on the 1010 though...there are two xlr inputs (in addition to
the 6 other rca ins). those two probably have pp...

Note: M-Audio 1010 mic inputs have no phantom power.

Note: You can always jumper the mic inputs of a 1010LT for 40 dB less gain.

Compared to an original SB Live!? Yes.

There are separate phantom power supplies such as those sold by Audio
Technica. I have their 4-mic phantom box that I've used with some Benchmark
Media mic preamps. But, with the Delta 1010LT there are only two channels
with mic preamps.

However, for less money (and probably less quality but still good enough for
many applications) you can do some useful things with low end mixing
consoles. The trick is to pick one that has either direct outs or insert
points. The direct outs will drive the line-level inputs of a computer audio
interface just fine. Insert points are a little trickier, but not a
stumbling block. I find that a mixing console is a nice tool for setting
levels and monitoring, even though my recordings aren't mixed while I'm
tracking.

Among those three, there isn't going to be a significant difference in
"sound quality." They might sound different but who's to say which one
is best? Only you. Don't worry about it. Buy for the features - and
that doesn't mean buy the one with the most features, it means buy the
one with the features that you need. Study them carefully, and think
really hard about how you're going to be working. It'll sort out.

As far as the mic overloading the preamp, don't worry about it. Well,
worry about it, but don't let it influence your choice of input
devices. You can buy an in-line pad for $20 that will take care of
that problem if you indeed have it.

Haven't tried 1010, but I have US-122 and it sounds very good. And it
also has phantom power.

AND - it's very comfortable to use it because it needs only one USB
cable and no outer power sources.
