screen resolution problem

i have toshiba laptop and laptop's screen is broken...so i buy a new dell monitor when i connect it to laptop, screen goes blank and something is written on screen like ...the current input time is not supportedby the monitor display please change ur input time to 1600*900 60 hz ....please help, how can i fix problem even my laptop screen is not working

Model/SKU for your Toshiba laptop. Make and model of your external display as well. How are you connected to your external display off your laptop? The HDMI port? Are you using any adapters?

Does it give the same message when you restart while connected to the external monitor? Does any intro / splash screen appear?
