I am not sure whether to go for the cheaper i3 toshiba 15" with 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD or the more expensive 17" with AMD E2, 6GB RAM, 750GB HDD.

Which one will be best for multitasking? My current laptop is really old and so slow it crawls some days. Not really into gaming so that's unimportant but I do have a lot of photos and movies I'd like to store. I'm not really up on which processors are better. Help!

The I3 is most likely the better bet for you, as long as it is not a low-voltage low clock speed version. I3's are dual core processors with hyperthreading, giving the baility to handle 4 threads simultaneously. The E2 would be simply a dual core processor, handling 2 threads at a time. The graphics in the E2 would possibly be better depending on models, but you mentioned gaming as being irrelevant. Go with the I3.
