A single 980 really isn't powerful enough to use over 4gb of vram so with a single 980 the 8gb of ram would be totally pointless... Only reason you would want to get the 8gb model is if you have 2-3 of these cards.

i actually planned to sli the 4gig one
sli with the 4gig one is fine at 1080p-1440p, if you are wanting to do 4k or triple monitor setups then the 8 gb models MIGHT give you slightly better performance... Stay with your 4gb card.
