sims 1 living large keeps crashing on windows 8

. this is a relatively new computer (purchased in 2013), When I try to save a new family/house, I get "An error was encountered saving the house", then the game stops working altogether...and then I get a Windows error message (A problem caused this program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available).

If it's an old game (ie released before Windows 8 was launched) try running it in compatibility mode:
