How do I hook up a smart tv box so that I get sound from the external speakers?

Box connects to TV with HDMI.
External speakers if they are self powered can connect to the TV audio output. Headphone out will allow the TV remote to adjust the volume of the speakers. Other outputs would usually be fixed. Depending on the the TV and speakers you might need a converter like one of these.

Some android boxes do have audio outputs. Check the specs on yours.
