Solved! so my screen is broken and there's a pop up behind it

all I can read is "led. press enter to continue". pressing enter shuts down the computer. I just want to know what it says, that's it

Do you have an external display/TV you can connect to the laptop? If so, you might be able to see the enter message on the second screen. You have have to toggle the display settings (usually a FN key you press) to change the output mode (internal display only, internal and external display, external only).

I do, but the computer won't even start up. The tablet only turns on when my computer is on the sign in screen. this pop up is before that

The "led" looks like the end of the word "failed". There has been some sort of system failure. At power on, can you enter the BIOS?

What is the make/model of this laptop?

The screen is totally black until this message pops up. it's an Windows 10 HP laptop

Pressing F10, right after powering on, may allow you to access the BIOS. If you can access the BIOS, the system may be working to some degree.

How did your display get damaged?

My friends and family think it was stepped on accidentally, but I don't recall me or anyone else stepping on it. It's likely that's what happened though

The storage device (SSD or HDD) inside the laptop is likely okay. The guts of the system could be damaged beyond repair if someone stepped on it.

This implies that the non-display part of the system is working (to some extent). A screen replacement may be possible.

I would like to, yes.

Also, when it was first stepped on it worked fine. for about a month I've been using my second display perfectly fine, but now this is happening.

The model number on the back is 15-ay103dx (I'm not sure if that answers your question though, I'm not very smart with computers)
