Some streams work, some don't

Hi,
I was thinking about buying an iPaq to use as "an Internet radio tuner" and
have borrowed a friend's iPaq for a few days. Some streams worked, while other
streams did not. The strange part is that the stream characteristics look the
same when I play them using my WMP9 on XP. His iPaq has Pocket PC 3.0 with
WMP8.0.

Could someone please try playing these streams with the newer WMP 9 on Window
Mobile 2003 SE, as that is likely what I'll end up with if I buy a new iPaq
(that new Hx4700 sure is sweet!)

This one works on the WMP8 player:

This one fails, but looks like the same kind of stream!:

1. http/mmslb.eonstreams.com/ccri_oh_cleveland_wmms_fm.asf
Works in WMP9 on my iPAQ 5550 through WiFi on 2Mbit Cable Internet.

2. http/ccri.eonstreams.com/ccri_oh_cleveland_wmji_fm.asf
Works in WMP9 on my iPAQ 5550 through WiFi on 2Mbit Cable Internet.

3. mms/66.250.188.14/WXGL_FM
Works in WMP9 on my iPAQ 5550 through WiFi on 2Mbit Cable Internet.
This stream takes a few seconds longer to load and buffer before
it starts to play. Appears to hang after first buffer attempt.

4. mms/chrw.usc.uwo.ca/CHRWLive
"A problem occurred while playing this file. Verify that you are
connected to the network or that any required storage cards are
inserted, and then try again."
This could however be a bandwidth issue, it takes too long to
load the stream, and it times out.

5. mms/66.250.188.20/CFPL_FM
Works in WMP9 on my iPAQ 5550 through WiFi on 2Mbit Cable Internet.

Hmm they all play for me, on a 5455 that has been upgrade to Windows Mobile
2003 using Windows Media Player 9 series version 9.0 build 13100. When the
server reaches the maximum number of connection it can appear as if it is
not supported stream.

I can now play all of the streams!
I upgraded my WMP 8.0 Build 0092 to the latest version WMP8.0 Build 0102
http/www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=4615afac-936c-40f

That allowed the http/ccri.eonstreams.com/ccri_oh_cleveland_wmji_fm.asf
stream to play, but the others still failed. Since the ones that worked
specifically referenced a .asf file, I added live.asf to the end of the failing
URLs and they work! eg. mms/66.250.188.14/WXGL_FM/ did not work, but
mms/66.250.188.14/WXGL_FM/live.asf works!

So, it seems the WMP 8.0 has trouble playing stream URLs that do not end with
..asf (or .asx). WMP9 doesn't seem to have that problem.
