I think nobrainer is correct: even if they have a plan for a price drop, they won't let on because it would kill sales until the drop went into effect.

[citation][nom]soldier37[/nom]Why such a desire for a slim PS3 by so many. It will be the same hardware, it won't play any better.[/citation]
For the same reasons people complained about the original Xbox's massive girth: it takes up so much damn room. A slimmer design would be more convenient when trying to integrate the console into a home entertainment center, or even just a crowded TV stand.

[citation][nom]soldier37[/nom]As for spruce drop save up and buy one, get a job hell get 2 jobs.[/citation]
A lot of people have trouble holding onto or even FINDING one job in this economy. Sony could lower the price of their console and expand their market share by making it more affordable, especially in this economic climate. It could be a smart business decision, as a lot of people are saying they won't by a current PS3 because of the current price.

[citation][nom]soldier37[/nom] I kind of like the exclusivity of the PS3.[/citation]
That's because you're a dick.

There was a article a month or so ago that said that sony was making a loss on each ps3 sold since it dropped to $400.

I believe I have the solution to this problem and it doesn't involve a price cut but would make more consumers attracted to the product. Simply bundle some of the PS3's older but great games with the console. Three or four games that come free with the console would certainly make it more attractive. This solution would cost Sony less in the end and create more initiative for people to buy the console.

I am the target demographic, 18-36 male, and am interested in owning a PS3. But I will not purhcase one until they cut the MSRP by $100 or more, the overall value just simply isn't there, especially in this economy.

There's not going to be a price drop on the PS3 this year. The PS3 is priced right
in line with the xbox360 pro. When you take the Xbox360pro at $ 299.00 plus add
your wireless controller for $ 99.00 your at 399.99 which is the same as a PS3. And with
an Xbox360 you don't get a Bluray player, What you do possibly get is alot of fan noise
and a 50% chance of three Rings of Death within 3 years of ownership. THe PS3 price is
a bargain, if you like high definition movies( Not available on Xbox360 Drives ) and you
like clean crisp game playing than the PS3 is for you.

could someone explain why the PS3 does not deserve the price it is at?

the PS3
plays current gen (console) games
plays old PS1 games (not really a good point but it does)
internet connectivity with Wifi out of the box and able to use the PSN network for FREE
Plays Blu-ray movies, DVD movies, divix and mp3s and other video and sound files
ability to stream media from the PS3 and all in hi-def
comes with HDD
BETTER MADE HARDWARE

The PS3 is a media powerhouse besides a gaming machine and is more flexible in everything compared to the Xbox 360

the whole PC vs. console debate can be argued to death. the only point i can make about it is with a console you just pop the disk in and the game plays. with a PC you have to install the game update software, drivers and possible error messages and stability issues

lol i love these replies. its easy to go on newegg and find the cheapest parts, not taking into account being bottlenecked, playing at the lowest resolutions, and having extremely dated and cheap parts. no cpu cooler? no fans? an open boxed video card. a motherboard with each review saying it failed after 8 months. you and chatt are funny. can't afford a console so you attack it.

$397.00. does that include shipping for the parts too and would that also be before taxes. still all you save is 3-4 bucks putting it against a PS3. i think i will sends the extra money on getting a game system where i do not have to hop threw hoops and troubleshoot many error massages and spend the year trying to get anything installed on a Linux OS which i can't even name 5 games that support it.

Way to go Captain! put an very quick end to this argument. It's not really feasible to make a machine as powerful or as capable as the PS3 at $400. Honestly, the thing comes with a nice Blu-Ray player, wireless internet, 80GB HDD, gaming on PSN, 2 USB ports (for you mouse and keyboard exclusive players), overall everything you'd want in a gaming machine in a single box.
The 360 can't even match that.

Do you feel dizzy or something like that??? Linux?? WTF!!!! Every hardcore gamer knows that linux can't play most of the best titles out there (or will function like crap on the OS).

Looks like you are an open office hardcore fan!! LOL :D

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sony! I hope they lose money becuase nobody will buy it. even if it's a new version or bundled. Sony sales have been a slouch and the game selection is mediocre so far. I own one, and use it as a BD player most of the time. Also as the version bump up the ps3 loses features like USB ports, card slots etc...how can the price stay the same?!

@tenor77 :
wow 1 impressive list you got there . what is that ? your grandma's pc . 4850 on 1080P screen , i wouldnt try that . no decent cpu fan = no overclock . dvd drive is nowhere near bluray and that case looks like it traps heat instead and looks nowhere as good as a ps3 . just because you're on a pc site doesnt mean you have to bash everthing else . take you list and your ignorant head somewhere else and admit that for the price of 400$ , a ps3 is the best you can get . period . 360 only worth as far as 300$ and still considered overpriced . a 60GB HDD for 100$ ? 512MB memory card for 50$ ? a wireless G receiver for 100$ ? good lord !

You're right duckmanx88. Anyone that thinks the PS3 is overpriced and poorly designed obviously just can't afford it.

I didn't use the cheapest parts available. I could build a comp for less than 250 if I wanted to build an eMachine. Nevermind that Biostar is a respectable mobo company with good reviews from motherboards.org. And where's the bottleneck on these specs? And a 95w processor can use the stock fan.

i won't be giving SONY my money.I did have a friend hook his up to my 42" plasma tv and we compared the same film 10,000BC with his ps3 & blu-ray and my oppo 1080p upsampled dvd.
guess what ? on my system which has power conditioners and good wiring i saw some difference but definately not enough to pay out twice as much per film and invest all the money into a ps3 console.
i will continue to play some games on my worstation and buy DVD's.
bye bye expensive blu-ray

[citation][nom]captaincharisma[/nom]BETTER MADE HARDWAREThe PS3 is a media powerhouse besides a gaming machine and is more flexible in everything compared to the Xbox 360[/citation]

I agree that it's better made, and a good overall machine, but it's getting older and losing lots of functionality than when it first came out. I'm also sad that the game selection is poor. I waited long for GT prolog to come out but it was a failure IMHO.

It does have excelent GFX and yes is a very good BD-player but it's time for a price cut. I think sony could move a lot more units and sell more games (which are more profitable than hardware) and even more BD movies.

The only thing that I argue, towards the same price, is that it would definitely hurt Sony stand alone BD players.
