Sony laptop PCG-FRV25 slows down too much..

Hi all, i have a 5 year old Sony Laptop, PCG-FRV25. Everytime when i run alot of multitasking it slows down drastically. Even by just playing high defination video, the whole video would be jerking. It wasn't like this long time ago, but over the past 2 years it's becoming like that. At the start i could still play 3D games like lineage2 or warcraft 3 or even Jedi Knight 2 on it. But now even viewing flash files are causing me problems because the whole system becomes very jerky.

Anyone have any CPU analysis tools or anything that can help me detect the problem?

I've updated my drivers and it still doesn't help.

correction : I have all available drivers that can be downloaded from sony's web.. unfortunately most of them are dated 2004-2003.. so i think i'm pretty outdated. But i have no idea where to download the new ones. Only my video card has new drivers from Omega drivers.

Just an update,

i ran some monitoring tools

Temp is at 75 or so sometimes when i have heavy work load. Is this normal?

It looks like you are infected with spyware/mallware because you didn't have this problem before. Check you're processes and memory usage. If you're memory usage is around 250mb or above then you have to many processes running thus slowing you're performance, also maybe one of you're memory modules is bad and allowing you only 256mb of ram. You're vaio has only 512mb of ram stock. I also have pcg-frv25 and mine is running like a champ with only 512mb of ram. It only takes about 30 sec to load xp! My cpu temperature also reaches 70c under heavy load. Cpu temperatures got me worried, and today I have opened my laptop and vacuumed some of the dust from the heat sink fans. I also tried to remove the heat sink to apply some thermal grease and I couldn't do it. I will try it again by completely removing motherboard. Right now my temps are 48c idle - 70c under heavy load.

ooo how do you open your laptop case?? i've been trying to figure this out for ages but never got it. I saw a few screws beneath the LCD. but was not able to open them as i didn't dare to open the LCD. do let me know how to open them.


Also, did you run a benchmark test on videeo? i just ran one yesterday.. got a whooping 15points.. while a IGP345 should have 40-50points.. while runing the test, my CPU reached 80+C if it weren't the test for only 3 mins. it would have killed my CPU for sure..

I know this is an old thread, but I want to offer some input. I continue to use a PCG-FRV25. I have replaced the hard drive twice, and have also replaced the fan unit and the optical drive. After I began to monitor the processor temperature I discovered that the fan unit becomes clogged with dust and needs to be blown out with compressed air fairly regularly. After one such cleaning, I discovered that the processor temperature dropped 20 degrees celsius afterwards (55 to 35). If I would have understood this earlier it may have saved me from having to replace some of these parts.

I also elevate the back of the laptop to allow more air flow through the lower fan vent openings. It is very important to make sure that these vents (and the rear one) are not blocked. They refer to these as "laptops," but we need to make sure that they can breathe freely if we use them on our laps or wherever.

It should also be noted that if the fan unit becomes dirty, games such as world of warcraft become unplayable because the fps slows way down due to over heating. I can successfully play WOW when I am out of town, but I use the Omega 2.5.90 video driver, which is an older one. Newer video drivers will not work for the gaming I do. I also adjust the game to the least intense graphic settings.
