"Disgruntled artists in the music business breathe a sigh of collective of grief when it comes to the ongoing "loudness wars." "

Ouch, that kinda hurts for Metallica. Now after they got out with another album, maybe it's time to learn how to make the album mix right?

MEtallica is way overrated. After the black album it has all been down hill for them... they need to retire we all know they are just in it for the money now esp. after the napster incident.

I have to think Metallica is rich enough to have their own studio and could produce it themselves... and I would think they still had enough balls to say hey, this sounds like crap, turn it down. Sadly, they probably can't hear that well and don't know it sux. Plus I think Hetfield has developed a lousy signing style. It's like he developed some wierd accent after the Black album. Yeah-e-ohh-yeah-ohh-uhh-owwee yeah.

I can always turn up my volume, but once the music is on the CD, I can't turn up the quality! Give the consumers quality and let us turn up the volume!

This new album is fantastic. It's right up there in quality along side with "Master Of Puppets" and "... And Justice For All". I'm not sure what this whole "loudness" business is all about. The distorted feel is great for a metal album like this one. Don't knock this album until you've heard the whole thing the whole way through. It really forces bands like Slayer and Godsmack to take a good look at themselves, and realize the bar has been raised yet again by Metallcia with their new album.

Metallica is not overrated. They are in the top 5 of all time greatest hard rock/metal bands in my opinion. How many bands do you know of that make a song sound good and heavy in the key of 'E'? Not many. Most bands have to resort to screaming and tuning their music to drop 'C' and 'B' to get that sound they want. Not Metallica. They're still rockin it out in 'E' with the occasional drop 'D' tuning, and it sounds terrific and melodic like the glory days of the 80's.

Yes, Metallica is my favorite band ... haters.

hey, you are all missunderstanding how the rec, mix and mastering process are done.
There´s no way a premix could reach any person outside the mixstudio. an unfinished mix is a different track.
nobody knows the truth in this cases. the only possible escenario is that the guitar hero crew had receive an unmastered version so they can make all the tracks that they use sound at a certain level.

We're not hating, you're just being a fanboy. You refuse to believe that your immaculate metallica can ever sound bad.

I agree with 'this guy' that the black album was the beginning of the end for metallica.

Metallica should just retire, with their terrible past few releases and Lars being a douche (about music downloads) I'd be happy to never hear from them again.

The issue isnt JUST with metallica tracks. Its with the CD mastering in general. like the article says with the "loudness wars" music is getting louder and louder and louder at the expense of quality.

its no wonder people are opting for the cleaner and understable tracks from the guitar hero game as opposed to the overblown stuff on the retial CD.

Us Consumers should be the ones to control the volume - NOT the publishing company.

Yeah, I would have to agree. Guitar Hero's gameplay relies on seperating the sounds of each instrument. Technically it is possible to use an equalizer to remove instruments from a mix in order to single one out, but that also affects the sound of the instrument you're trying to single out. The only way to create a game like Guitar Hero, without making it sound like crap, is to receive the original masters before they are mixed. That means that each track is a different instrument. The makers of Guitar Hero and Rock Band would require these tracks in order to make their games work to the best of their ability and the most likely reason the Guitar Hero version is clean. They received the instrument tracks before they were mixed. The mixing phase is when all the instruments are added together and made into two tracks, the left and right channels. To add to the confusion, the recording terminology is different to the album terminology where a track is considered a song.

Can you be any more of a blind fanboy? ...And Justice For All having quality? In fact, Lars and James ripped out Jason Newsted's bass track almost entirely from the album, because they were too scared and/or unsure of Jason's playing. This is an undisputed fact, look it up. Justice is an awesome album but any fan can recognize what Hetfield/Ulrich did once they start to think (and listen) outside of the Metallica box. This is the point that Metallica started to betray themselves, after they lost Cliff, who kept them on the right track (James looked up to Cliff). Now what we have is a group of men taking themselves way too seriously, having to resort to overpaid psychologists to help pander to their overbloated egos that are fueled by fanboys who refuse to think Metallica can do any wrong, even when Metallica spit in the face of their fans and everything they once stood for. End of rant.

I didn't realize that anybody still listened to Metallica. I thought that all of their fans from the 80s/early 90s had abandoned them. In fact, almost everyone I know is a metal fan and none of them listen to any newer Metallica and none of them have bought tickets to see them when they come here in a couple of months.

I haven't taken Metallica seriously ever since that time I heard they got caught faking a concert with studio tracks. Like nobody is going to notice that?!?! And what's up with the programmed synth drums on their latest album? If I wanted sequenced drums I'd go listen to '80s Cars

The ironic thing in all this: Metallica's official album sounds like it mp3's downloaded from Napster, and in order to get a high quality version of their album you have to download it illegally.
