Sound cards question

Do I need a sound card for my laptop? Preferably a usb one. My laptop is not with me at the moment but I can find out more information if specifications are needed. It's a HP core i5 win 8.1 6 gigs of ram. Any advice would be great.

Why would you need a soundcard with a laptop? They come with integrated sound that's better than most soundcards were five years ago. If you're doing some kind of professional audio encoding or editing, then maybe, otherwise, unless your integrated sound has failed I don't see any need.
