Sound enhancer for Windows 8.1?

Hello Tom's Hardware.

I'm just wondering if there's a good sound enhancer for Windows 8.1? My laptop has poor sound even when I play through my surround. I've used SRS Pro Audio Essentials before but it ended up completely messing up my sound drivers.

I'd like to not spend any money at all if possible. I wonder if there's a good program that I can download?

What do you want the program to do? There are equalisers that will help you make minor adjustments to the sound at different frequencies, but that's about it.
