Sound not working

Hi,
I recently smashed my phone so am currently using my brothers old one , I have no clue what he has done to it but the sound is not working. The phone will vibrate but sound won't work and when you plug in the headphones it isn't even saying they are connected.
It is a Samsung Galaxy J1 phone

Did you check the audio settings already to make sure it's not set to vibrate? Did the sound work before you started using the phone?
