Sound TV to DVD

While playing DVD's I have a muffled sound coming from my TV.

The connection is as follows DirectTV receiver, to Vizio TV, to to Sony DVD player. What should I be doing differently?

The DirectTV should have nothing to do with this, the DVD player is connected directly to the TV correct? With what connections? Did you check to make sure all cables are tight and see if the DVD player has it's own volume and all volume settings are OK?
