am not getting sound to my hp 620 note book but do have sound on the head phones side but not on the machine side

Do you mean that when you plug headphones in sound works OK, but your laptops's internal speakers don't work?

If so, it sounds like your laptop's internal speakers are broken or the internal wire to them. I would doubt there's anything you can do about it as laptops are difficult to repair.

Maybe get some cheap external speakers and plug those in?
