Soundbar to tv with DirecTV

I have an older Toshiba HDTV with a Wireless DirecTV receiver. I am trying to connect a Samsung HW-KM45C sound bar. Both the tv and sound bar have 2 HDMI ports as well as a digital optical cable port. Currently I have the DirecTV box hooked to the TV with HDMI. I tried to add the sound bar by simply hooking the optical cable from sound bar to tv...no sound. I then tried by running HDMI cable from the DirecTV box to the soundbar HDMI "IN" and HDMI "OUT" from soundbar to TV, this time no picture or sound. Any help appreciated. Thanks

You may have to turn on the optical audio output, turn the TV speakers off, and change the audio output type in the TV menu to get it working, Select the optical input on the soundbar as your source.
