Spdif / digital audio confusion

I am confused about whether or not i can use a spdif cable to connect my computer to an older home theater-in- a-box system i own. My computer has an optical spdif output, and right next to it is what i beleive to be the non optical version of spdif. On my home theater their is a "digital in" port. Is this digital in port also a spdif port? My motherboard is a GA-MA790X-UD4P and my home thearter is a philips hts3450/37.

According to the Philips site (http/www.p4c.philips.com/files/h/hts3450_37/hts3450_37_pss_aen.pdf) your home theatre system has a coaxial spdif input. That is the non-optical version.

The Gigabyte site (http/www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=3038) also mentions a coaxial spdif output. So you should be able to connect the two of them with digital coaxial.

You should be able to tell right away if it's a digital (S/PDIF) or analog signal, color usually orange or black with writings Digital or SPDIF. If it's analog, it would just say Audio Out/In, Sub or Output/Input.

Alright thanks guys for all your help. It looks like i'm off to Walmart to grab a coax digital audio cable.
