Speakers not detected by computer

Hello!
My speakers are not detected by my computer. They work fine on my laptop and used to work fine on my desktop but not anymore. I used the troubleshooter and it said the speakers are not plugged in, I am using windows 8.1. Anyone have any idea what the problem may be?

So it does not work either through HDMI and headphones do not work as well :/

Looks like your motherboard is faulty. Can you RMA it?

I really don't want to unless I absolutely have to. You see this is sort of my only computer right now and I use it to work and everything. So I need it currently.
And it used to work fine about two weeks ago. Then I installed bitdefender and it just stopped working, but I already tried turning it off and even uninstalling it it did not help.
Do you think a sound card might do the trick?

That card is pretty good. It should do well.

You don't need 7.1, 5.1 is more than enough. In fact just stereo is OK for 99% of speaker systems.
