speakers work headphones don't

I am getting sound from my speakers on my desktop but when I plug in the headphones nothing comes through. When I go into the control panel I do hear the test sounds, I can see the music on the speakers icon but nothing on the headset. Can someone help?

Can you try a different headset? Have you tried re-installing the sound driver?

pull out your speaker 3.5mm plug and plug the headphones into it. do you get sound?
