Static Sound from speakers.

Hi. I seem to be having a problem with playing sounds on my computer.

When ever I play music/play a game, there is a soft but prominent (and VERY annoying) crackling sound. It's not always there, it comes and goes every few seconds as the music/sounds change.

I know it's not the speakers, because when I plug my iPod directly into the speakers, the sound is not there. I've tried 2 different sets of speakers, and each one has this problem.

What could be causing this? Is it fixable?

(I have a theory that the soundcard built into my mobo is dying, is that possible?)

I have tried connecting it to the front panel connectors and the rear. Also, the sound is not there with headphones.

What program are you running the sounds/music through? And this happens with games too? First thing I would guess is the sound card. Either that or the sound quality just diminishes when put through the comp. and then through the speakers.

anything, youtube, music players, games, any type of sound has a weird crackling noise. once i restart the computer, it goes away. but it always comes back.
