Solved! steelseries headset issues

i just got a pair of steelseries arctis 5 headphones from my boyfriend who used them for a while, and they always worked fine for him. i was gifted them yesterday, and i just tried to use them today. when i plugged it into the audio jack on my macbook, only the right side worked. i plugged it into my phone and had no issue, and i plugged another pair of headphones into my macbook and both sides worked. when i plugged in the usb and tried my macbook, it didnt work at all. it seems to only be the steelseries-macbook combination. any tips?

If they work on other devices and other headsets work fine on your MacBook only thing I can currently think of is making sure your drivers are updated.
