I've got a old stereo that I want to take the speakers from but they need to be connected to the speaker for it to work so can I like take a 3.5mm headphone jack plug the speaker wires to the wires on the jack and it would work?

Yeah, that should work. Amplifiers can range a lot in price depending on features, quality and power. How much power you need depends on what wattage the speakers are and how loud you want to drive them.

Are you sure you're not just better off leaving them connected to the stereo, and connecting your audio source to that? Even if it doesn't have a 3.5mm jack, if the stereo is also a radio you can get an FM adaptor with a 3.5mm input.

You mean wire the speakers to a 3.5mm connector via speaker wire, and then be able to plug that into a 3.5mm jack on something like a phone and play music? No, that wouldn't work, you'd need an amp to power the speakers.

so I would need a amp to connect the speakers to then connect my device to the amp and it would work. are amps cheap and how big does the amp have to be?
